EPIC: The Story of God

Absalom Defeated
2 Samuel 18-19

Summary:
David sent thousands of troops out to fight. David wanted to march with his men but his commanders said that he was the only one that the enemies were after, so David stayed back at the gates of the city to wait while his men went to war. David instructed his commanders to “be gentle on the man Absalom for my sake” (2 Samuel 18:5) Absalom met David’s men and was separated from his donkey. One of the men who saw him did not strike him down. This man went to Joab and told him he found Absalom. This man did not strike Absalom down because he did not want to be the one to lift a hand against the King’s Son. Joab killed Absalom along with several other men. (2 Samuel 19) No one wanted to tell David the news of his son. David mourns and weep loudly for his son. The entire army returns to their home ashamed to show their faces to David.

Question of the Day:
Can I love my enemies with the love I have for my own son or daughter? Is God teaching us about his love for us amid all of our own sins?

Prayer Focus:
God, thank you for your love and grace even though I am a sinner.
Help me to show the love that David showed for his son, that I to can become a person of love and grace for others.
