EPIC: The Story of God
Tuesday March 31

1 Kings 2-3
Solomon Rules

Summary:

In 1 Kings 2, King David tells Solomon that he must obey God’s commandments. After King David dies, Solomon judges and punishes some prominent people that have acted against God’s will. One of these prominent people, is his brother Adonijah. Adonijah tried to marry one of Solomon’s wives, which was a play to try to take Solomon’s power. As a result of Solomon ordering these enemies killed, he takes complete control of the throne.
In 1 Kings 3, Solomon asks God to give him wisdom for governing and a heart that can distinguish between right and wrong. God gives him a wise and discerning heart. Solomon then has two prostitutes come to him to settle a dispute. Both women had a child, and apparently in the middle of the night, one of the mothers accidently smothered her child. In the morning both mother’s claimed the living child was their own. Solomon had to decide how to administer justice and determine which mother was lying.

Sample of Today's Reading:
1 Kings 3:5, 7-10At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” Solomon answered, “Now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this.
