Day Two: The Battles of Jericho and Ai
Joshua 5-8
Summary:
As the Israelite people move into the land God had promised, they find themselves facing many difficult battles. In this section you will read about the miraculous defeat of the city of Jericho as well as the very strategic battle at Ai. The book of Joshua and the Old Testament in general contain many bloody battles, which are often difficult to stomach as people who remember Jesus’ words, “Love your enemies.” But the events of the Old Testament took place in a time period characterized by two things: a culture of war and rampant corruption. God fulfilled his promises during a barbaric time in history where violence was the way of life. In addition, the practices of pagan worship were out of control as people were sacrificing their own children to appease their gods. As you read through some of these difficult pages, look for ways that God was beginning his work of redeeming a world far from him.

Joshua 6:1-5
Joshua 6:1-5
1 Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.
2 Then the LORD said to Joshua, "See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams' horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. 5 When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have all the people give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the people will go up, every man straight in."
