EPIC: The Story of God
Wednesday March 4

Gideon
Judges 6-8

Summary
Gideon’s story reminds us, as it reminded the
Israelites of his own day, that God is the real
power behind any spiritual triumph in life.
Gideon knew that his clan was “the weakest
in Manasseh” and he “the least in his
family”—an unlikely hero indeed! But God
picked him. The Spirit of the Lord came
upon Gideon, empowering him to lead a
band of three hundred valiant men against an
army of over 135,000, and to defeat them
completely! God expressly did this to
prevent his wayward people from thinking
that “their own strength had saved them”
(7:2). This spectacular victory serves as a
powerful object lesson of our total
dependence on God.

Sample of Today’s Reading
Judges 6-8
6:1 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the
Lord, and for seven years he gave them into the
hands of the Midianites. . . . 11 The angel of the
Lord came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah
that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son
Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep
it from the Midianites. 12 When the angel of the
Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is
with you, mighty warrior.”

Question of the Day:
What humanly impossible conflict are you facing?
Where is God saying to you
“The Lord is with you, mighty warrior!”?

Prayer Focus:
God, I am all too painfully aware of my own
weakness. The battles I am facing can only be won by
you. I invite you into these struggles.
Be my strength through the power of your
Holy Spirit.
